Think Spring!

Sunshine-y days have us dreaming about tropical climates (and summer days at Bailie Beach) and we are craving island food like Marcus Samuelsson's Fish Burger with Egg and Bajan Mayo.

Eggs and seafood are the perfect match!

The Winter Egg Share has ended and  Summer CSA Shares start on June 3rd so be sure to sign-up and guarantee your dozen every weekend.  Chicken Shares are still available, too.

Fa-la-la-la-local

Just when you thought it was the off-season... the baby chicks have arrived! Our new Certified Organic layers are just a few days old and staying warm under heat lamps in the brooder.  On the farm we are already busy with preparations for the 2016 season.  The  Chicken and Egg Summer CSA Shares are now available online and make a great (unique) gift.  Who wouldn't want fresh, organic eggs and chicken all summer?  Out East Foodie even included our CSA in her list of Top Ten Local Gifts.

Making a List

This week our farm products made it onto several Top Holiday Lists: The Ten Best Things I Ate in 2015 for #4 Minty Moonpies & The Top Ten North Fork Gifts for our #7 Heritage Wool Collection.  Browder's Birds is also on the Top 12 North Fork Foodie Gift List at #3.  Food or Fashion - we have the Holidays covered and we couldn't be prouder!

Find delicious Minty Moonpies at our farmers markets and in the stand this weekend.  Our Heritage Cotswold Collection will also be available in our farmstand and at the Homegrown Artisan Market at the Hayground School in Bridgehampton this Saturday. You can always shop online in our Pantry.

Farmers' Market & CSA News plus a North Fork film Premiere!

At the farm we are looking forward to having our first batch of lambs out on pasture this coming week.   Be sure to check our facebook page to see the first pics!

 FARMERS' MARKETS
This Saturday, June 8th find us on the North Fork at the Greenport Farmers' Market and on the South Fork at the Westhampton Beach Farmers' Market.

Information on all of our markets this season can be found on our website and updated regularly on  our Market Calendar.

Red Broilers will be available in limited quantities this Saturday - please plan to come early to the market to purchase one.  The "Reds" are slower growing chickens with more dark meat and richer flavor.  The Cornish Cross, our White Broilers, offer more white meat and more chicken breast.

NEW!  We are offering cuts of organic chicken at our farmers markets. Look for organic chicken breasts, thighs, drumsticks and wings for sale.  We also offer chicken liver and chicken hearts (our cats love hearts).  If you like to make your own organic chicken stock, ask for specially-priced bags of chicken back & neck.  Feet always available by advance reservation.

On farm sales available every Saturday afternoon from 3:00 - 5:00 PM and on Wednesdays from 3:00 - 5:00 PM during our CSA Pick-up.  Please note that if we sell out of chicken at the farmers' markets only eggs will be available for sale on the farm.
You can also purchase our organic eggs at Fork & Anchor General Store in East Marion and at Provisions & Ingredients in Peconic.

CHICKEN & EGG CSA
Full chicken and egg shares should pick-up at your designated market on Saturday.  As a reminder, half shares should pick up if they skipped the previous Saturday.
CSA pick-ups are also available on Saturday & Wednesday from 3:00 - 5:00 PM at the farm.  Or just stop by during those hours and visit with the baby chicks in the barn. They'd love to see you!

GROWING FARMERS
This Saturday at 3pm at the Cutchogue Library there will be a screening of the documentary film, Growing Farmers, followed by a panel discussion that will include Chris.  Please come out and see this film at its North Fork premiere!
If you can't make it on Saturday, you can still watch this important film by downloading the link on our website.
We look forward to seeing you this weekend!

Hurricane Preparations

After consulting with many local farmers about our options, we made the decision to move all the chickens on our pasture into the barn at Charnews Farms starting tomorrow. The Peconic Land Trust is allowing us to use a second barn bay as we'll have over 400 chickens to house and different ages will have to be kept separate from one another. It's a lot harder than it sounds. All the chickens will have to be caught, put into cages and transported to the barn in batches. Then we'll secure the empty pens out on the pasture with rope.

The laying hens will also move into the barn, along with their coop, until the storm passes. The smallest chicks are only 3 days old and we plan to house them in cardboard boxes with water and feed, and use their brooder for larger chickens.

Today, Chris dismantled the entire processing area and our tent. Needless to say we won't be processing as usual on Monday! But hopefully by Wednesday we'll be back together again and back on schedule.

Finally, the Land Trust also lent us a generator so if we do lose power than our freezers (and inventory) will still stay cold. Please don't worry about your CSA chickens! Stay safe!!

Spring Update

Greetings!
It's been busy on the farm this month - we've already had two sets of baby broiler chicks delivered so far this season. The youngest chicks are still in the brooder but we plan to put them out on pasture on Thursday. The older chickens have been enjoying the Spring weather and the thick, green grass and big bugs that seem to flourish on our land.

We also have added 30 Rhode Island Red laying hens to our flock. These chickens are 'pullets', a term for a young hen less than one year old. We look forward to having fresh eggs for sale in another month.

Sadly, we did suffer a severe predator attack on the pasture recently and lost nearly 50 chickens. It is a huge set-back for us and deeply unsettling. Chris has been spending many nights on the pasture keeping an eye on the chickens while we deal with this threat. Eventually we will make up for the loss but initially we will start the season with a limited number of broilers for sale. It may even mean that we delay the start of the markets & CSA until June. We will make that decision soon. But don't worry - there will be plenty of chickens to come!
